Range Operations (RO)

Range operations Entity is primarily responsible for co-ordinating the launch campaign activities and also supporting the launches of PSLV, GSLV and sounding rockets.

Range Instrumentation System (RIS), Mission Analysis and Range Safety (MARS),  Meteorology (MET) and SHAR Computer Facility (SCOF) are major groups of Range Operations.  The Range Instrumentation System comprises of tracking, telemetry, and telecommand systems. The launch vehicle is tracked by high precision radars right from the lift-off.

The vehicle position information is instantaneously computed from the tracking data and is used for range safety decisions and also for evaluating the performance of the vehicle. The performance of various systems of the vehicle is telemetered to the ground and the ground stations acquire the data. The telecommand system is used to transmit commands to the vehicle, and is mainly available to the Range Safety Officer to terminate the flight of the vehicle, in the event of the vehicle malfunctioning and deviating from the predicted trajectory beyond the acceptable limits.
