World Space Week
Since 2002, during every October 4 - 10, Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR has been celebrating 'World Space Week'. The intent of these celebrations is to inform the general public about space and its applications for the benefit of the society. During the week, a two-day special programme, designed exclusively for the X class students (who passed out X class in the previous academic year) is being conducted, in the form of a competition. For this we invite all the district toppers (1st rankers) of X class exam., (both CBSE and A.P State Board) in A.P.
During that programme GSLV Award is presented to the brilliant student who emerges as winner in the competitions held at SDSC SHAR. This award was instituted by Sri R.V. Perumal, Former Director, LPSC and is managed by SDSC SHAR Staff Benevolent Fund. Every year, on an average around 50 students attend the competition.
After obtaining the rankers details from respective authorities of the Exam., Boards, we establish contact with the students and send invitations. They are permitted to bring an escort. For both of them we reimburse the train/bus fair (in both ways) and treat them as over official guests for 2 days.
In the first day forenoon generally the students arrive. Same day afternoon talent test in 3 rounds is conducted, and at the end of the final round, the winner and runners-up will be known. The next day, the team will be taken round Sriharikota for a visit to the important technical facilities. In the afternoon awards are presented in a special function.
After the function, as per the travel plans of the students the teams are dropped at Sullurupeta Bus stand/Railway station in departmental buses. To serve as memoir we send by email (within a week) a few photos to each of the participants. SDSC SHAR presents them colorful literature that gives good insight into the activities of ISRO.
